ABOUT ME
Hi, I’m Vanessa Parker, creator of The Single, Sick & Broke Traveler.
I’ve been traveling for more than 35 years, and I’ve learned something important: you don’t need perfect health, a perfect budget, or a perfect life to have an incredible trip.
I live with several chronic illnesses, including rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, fibromyalgia, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and congestive heart failure. I’ve also dealt with degenerative disc disease and disc replacement surgery.
Yeah, it’s a lot.
But I still travel.
I’ve Been a Caregiver, Too
For most of my life, I was my mother’s primary caregiver. She had severe rheumatoid arthritis and used a wheelchair for the last 20 years of her life.
That didn’t stop us from traveling. We traveled throughout the United States together, often with her service dog, Teddy, who became one of the great loves of both our lives.
Those experiences taught me something I still believe today:
Travel doesn’t have to look like everyone else’s to be worth taking.
Why Another Travel Blog?
Geez, why? There are already seems to be thousands of them.
But that’s exactly why I created this one.
The Single, Sick & Broke Traveler is for people who want to travel even when life makes it complicated—solo travelers, people living with chronic illness, caregivers, and travelers working with a real-world budget.
If traveling alone makes you nervous, I want to help you take that first step.
If your health makes travel unpredictable, I want to help you plan around your body instead of fighting it.
If money is tight, I want to show you that budget travel doesn’t have to mean giving up comfort or the experiences that matter to you.
And if you’re a caregiver who wants to travel with the person you care for and aren’t sure how to make it work—or you’re desperately in need of a break yourself—there’s a place for you here, too.
Get There Your Way
After 35+ years of traveling single, sick, and sometimes seriously budget-conscious, I’ve learned there is no one right way to travel.
You don’t have to wait until your health, finances, or life are perfect.
You just need to find the way that works for you.
If you’re wondering whether travel is still possible when life isn’t exactly cooperating, start here!
